dc.description.abstract The water storage dams supplying Palm Island's community of 5000 people have fallen to critically low levels, and the Queensland Government have announced funding for the construction of a desalination plant. The plant requires the installation of permanent marine infrastructure, specially two pipelines for raw water intake and brine discharge. This pipeline infrastructure will be located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP). The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) are considering allowing the construction of pipelines and desalination discharge as Urgent Works under the emergency provisions of the GBRMP Zoning Plan 2003. en_US
