dc.description.abstract Annual massive coral growth and luminescence records were visualised by x-ray and UV images in slices from three coral cores from Darnley Island and Bramble Cay in the northern Torres Strait. The longest and most reliable of these records (BRM03C) covers the period 1781-1993. Annual coral growth rates for all three cores are typical of massive Porites corals living in the average sea surface temperatures of the northern Torres Strait. There is no evidence of growth hiatuses in any of the cores that might be associated with environmental stress events. Luminescent lines (indicative of freshwater flood plumes) are evident in both corals from Bramble Cay but not the coral from Darnley Island. At Bramble Cay, there are usually several pulses of freshwater each year, likely associated with atmospheric or oceanic processes pushing the freshwater onto the reef. These pulses of freshwater are evident back to 1781. El Nino-Southern Oscillation events also result in marked differences in rainfall (and hence Fly River flow) and sea surface temperature (SST) in the northern Torres Straits. en_US
